rambles of miss D :)

aa

ray-that was beautiful (*wipes tear from eye*). your definition of a 'broken heart' leaves little to be desired. the pure eloquence, complete with hand gestures were as poetic as they were emphatic. such shakespearean style we never knew you posessed!

to enlighten my dear reader/bloggership on the reasons for the above dedication, i shall elaborate: we went to la azmi house for a spot of socialising, and decided to play a bit of taboo (forgive my lack of patience in describing the game). our dear ray was landed with the card: 'broken heart'. this is how he went about describing it:

ray: this is when your boyfriend leaves you... and you feel hurt (places hand on heart)...inside...

*sigh* the tears do stream!

LOL. needless to say we were merciless. the poor boy was much embarrased :D.

anyways, have been attending la sheikh zia ullah khan course, and its very good mA. and hes darn funny. the poor man could barely keep a straight face when the lord mayor walked in today with his big gold medal necklace thingy. just couldn't take it seriously:D. it was cuz we had the fundraiser today that the mayor guy came, where, i would like to point out, we raised about £25000 mA mA! half for the manchester muslim centre and half for sheikh zia's islamic centre in canada. o and, as usual, the sisters out did the bros and donated most;).

ok am suffering from bloggers block once more. more tomorrow iA.

ws love & duas

hey man don't diss the kid. He's watched barely any tv since the cable cut out and has to work his bones out (?) to catch up at school- though he was fully appreciative of It's a Wonderful Life. That film is so joyful if you can get through the sad part. Not like GWTW...

i thought placing one's hand on one's heart would be too telling according to the rules. in any case, sweet, in a ever so slightly perverse way. needless to say, i pray no one has such an experience, or if they do, that it's more like the burda of ka'b ibn zuhayr, and not a boy/girlfriend!

for those interested, there's a beautiful commentary on ka'b's burda by imam al-suyuti (d. 1505). ka'b was a non-muslim who refused to become muslim, even when his entire tribe converted. however, having insulted the prophet in poetry, his blood was declared halal. thereafter, he had no choice but to seek the prophet's forgiveness--the prophet was known to forgive ppl if they came in person and sought forgiveness.

on meeting the prophet, he was forgiven, and then extemporised a qasida (classical arabic ode--partly love poetry), which starts with 'banat su'adu fa qalbi'l-yawma matbulu' that is, approximately, 'su'ad has left and my heart, this day, is bleeding'. the story goes that su'ad was his wife, and he divorced her, but the pain of separation was unbearable, etc. through the course of the poem, he praises the prophet, and hearing the praise, the prophet awarded ka'b his cloak (burda), thus the name of the poem.

Busayri's burda is named after this one. for the odd arabist reader, it's available in a good edition from mu'assasa risala.
